The spine works as the main support for the spinal cord and the nerve pathways that carry information from the arms, legs, and rest of the body, and carries signals from the brain to the body. Your back is composed of 33 bones called vertebrae, 31 pairs of nerves, 40 muscles and numerous connecting tendons and ligaments running from the base of your skull to your tailbone. Between your vertebrae are fibrous, elastic cartilage called discs. These “shock absorbers” keep your spine flexible and cushion the hard vertebrae as you move.
The spinal disc is a soft cushion that sits between each vertebrae of the spine. When the disc ruptures, a portion of the spinal disc pushes outside its normal boundary —this is called a herniated disc. When a herniated disc bulges out from between the vertebrae, the spinal nerves and spinal cord can become pinched. There is normally a little extra space around the spinal cord and spinal nerves, but if enough of the herniated disc is pushed out of place, then these structures may be compressed.
A herniated disc may occur suddenly in an event such as a fall or an auto accident. When a herniated disc occurs, the space for the nerves is further diminished, and irritation of the nerve results.
Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage to the spinal cord that results in a loss of function such as mobility or feeling. Frequent causes of damage are trauma such as a car accident or a slip and fall accident.
At Chanco Schiffer, P.C., we are dedicated to helping personal injury victims seek the compensation they need and deserve. We have helped clients seek financial compensation for severe neck, back and spinal cord injuries. We understand that back and neck injuries can often be difficult to diagnose, or become chronic conditions that can last for a lifetime.
Catastrophic Injuries Resulting in Paralysis
Many spinal cord injuries and paralysis are the result of auto accidents, truck wrecks, and motorcycle accidents. Victims of spinal cord injuries are typically permanently damaged by partial paralysis, paraplegia or quadriplegia before they ever reach the hospital. We maintain a network of medical, engineering, accident reconstruction and economic consultants who assist us in accidents involving spinal cord injuries.
